The Importance of Editing

Editing is as important to the vision and message of your book as its design and marketing—maybe more so. The idea of choosing and working with an editor can seem daunting, but for self-publishing authors who are serious about selling their books, hiring a professional book editor is a must.

Your book will compete not only with other self-published books, but also with traditionally published books that have undergone rigorous editing by their publishing companies. Good editing will enable your book to shine and will set you apart from self-publishers who don't understand the importance and benefits of editing.

Join us as we explain the following and more:

  • Why editing is important to the health of your book and its sales potential
  • The three basic levels of editing, along with other services editors might offer
  • How to determine which levels of editing your manuscript needs
  • How to choose the right editor for your book
  • How to work with an editor at each step of the editing process, including building trust and clarifying the vision for the book
  • Why getting a manuscript critique can be helpful
  • The various ways editors price their services and what you can expect to pay
  • The mechanics of editing, including accepting/rejecting changes in Microsoft Word, version control, sharing files, style guides, and style sheets

Developmental editor Linda Wolf and copyeditor Kim Bookless will co-present on the wonderful world of editing, followed by a Q&A session.

After the meeting we'll adjourn to a nearby restaurant and we'd love to have you join us so we can continue the conversation.
